Hardware Questions

Can memory be upgraded to 2GB?

The RAM in fit-PC2 is soldered on-board - a significant factor in allowing ultra-small size and optimised power usage - but which also means that it therefore can not be upgraded.

What kind of Hard Drive (HDD) is Fit-PC2 compatible with?

Fit-PC2 is compatible with any 2.5" SATA Hard drive - there is no capacity limit - though internal speed limitation of the chipset means that there is no speed advantage to getting an HDD with faster than 5400 rpm or quicker 3.0 (3 Gb/s) format.
If all of that doesnt mean much to you, then as a guide you shouldn't be paying more than £25 for a 160GB SATA drive, or £50 for a 320GB Hard drive. If you are you're probably buying more speed than you need.

Is Wake-on-LAN supported?

No, Wake-on-LAN is not supported. (Note: this should not be confused with Boot-on-LAN which is supported).

Is boot from LAN supported?

Yes. BIOS can be configured for PXE boot (boot from the network).

(Note: this should not be confused with Wake-on-LAN which is NOT supported - see above)

Does the miniSD port of fit-PC2 support SDHC?

No. SDHC is not supported.

Can Fit-PC2 Auto-resume when the power has been temporarily interrupted?

Fit-PC2's purchased before the end of July will not have the Auto-Resume feature (which is present in previous Fit-PC models).

From late-July we will be stocking units with the Auto-Resume functiionality and anticipate it becoming standard within 3-4 months.

Does Fit-PC2 come with built-in WiFi as standard?

Built-in WiFi is available as an optional extra at a cost of £15 per unit. It is now available on 1.6GHz Turbo models, and will be made available for 1.1GHz models by the end of July 09.

What Graphics chip does Fit-PC 2 use?

Fit-PC2 uses the GMA500 graphics chip from Intel. Please see other questions in the FAQ for details on compatibility with Linux and XP and driver support for both.

I heard there is no Linux display driver?...

Display drivers in Ubuntu are closed source, but provide very decent 2D and excellent hardware accelerated video. Drivers currently support Ubuntu 8.04 so fit-PC2 Linux ships with that version. Newer Ubuntu currently work with VESA drivers only. For updates to the situation, please see here.

Can I connect fit-PC2 to a VGA display?

Not directly - VGA displays use Analogue signal inputs and the video output from Fit-PC2 is Digital so they are not directly compatible. There are DVI to VGA adapters, though they tend to be expensive (~£50 and up).

Recent update: We now offer a USB-VGA Adaptor, which after a one-time setup will enable you to connect your Fit-PC2 directly to any VGA display. They are also capable of connecting to a DVI/HDMI monitor as a second monitor, all through the USB port. Cost is £32 + VAT, please see here for details.

NOTE: You may come across HDMI to VGA adaptors which cost considerably less (£10-£15) but they do not convert the signal from digital to Analogue so they will not allow you to connect Fit2 to your VGA-input display.

Does Fit-PC2 have a Serial (RS232) port?

No, Fit-PC2 does not have a built-in serial port, however you can use one of the 6 USB ports together with a USB-Serial converter (Approx. £10-15) which will do the same job.
If you would still prefer a Fit-PC with built-in serial port and do not require the speed of Fit-PC2 then please take a look at our other model, Fit-PC Slim.

Software Questions

Are there GMA500 optimized Linux display drivers?

Yes. The drivers are currently available in binary form only for Ubuntu 8.04

General Fit-PC2 Questions

What is "Auto-Resume"?

Auto-resume applies to situations when the power to your PC cuts out unexpectedly.
For most standard PCs, even when the power comes back on you would have to press the 'ON' button to restart the PC, but a computer with Auto-Resume will re-start itself as soon as the Power comes back on, without the need to press any buttons.

This functionality is generally useful for using Fit-PC2 in applications which are hard-to-reach, or if you wont have physical access to the machine for whatever reason. Most standard PC users wont need Auto-Resume.

Can I use fit-PC2 with a large-screen TV?

Yes. fit-PC2 connects to a large-screen TV through the TV HDMI connector. Note though, audio is NOT transfered over the HDMI cable (it is a DVI-D signal) and needs to be connected the analog audio input of the TV or to external speakers.

Can Fit-PC2 run the new Windows 7 (coming out in Oct '09)?

Yes. Fit-PC2 has been extensively evaluated with the new Windows 7 Operating system and works absolutely flawlessly. In fact, from the end of October we will be offering Fit-PC2s with Windows 7 pre-loaded as another model option.

Does Youtube play fine on fit-PC2?

Yes, web-based flash content like Youtube plays very smoothly on Fit-PC2 in both Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows XP, as do other online video archives such as BBC iPlayer, ITV-Player etc.

Does HD-video really play flawlessly on Fit-PC2 - All other Atom-based PCs struggle with HD?

Yes. That's part of what makes Fit-PC2 such a revolutionary computer - Ground breaking Performance while still retaining it's truly Green credentials.

Though other Atom-based Nettop/Netbooks struggle with even 720p HD video, Fit-PC2 is optimised for performance, enabling it to utilises the hardware acceleration available on the GMA500 graphics chip used.

Standard HD performance is 30% CPU usage for full 1080p HD content on the Turbo version (about 45% on the 1.1GHz version) and around 15% (30%) for 720p.

Can I get Audio to my screen/TV through the HDMI output as well?

No - the HDMI port on fit-pc2 does not transmit audio as well - there is a separate audio output jack on the back of Fit-PC2 (see here) which can be connected to external speakers, or a digital audio input on your TV / monitor.

What is the standard Warrantee for Fit-PC2?

Fit-PC2 comes with a 12-month manufacturers Warrantee as standard. Warrantee extension up to 3 years is available subject to an added premium of 10% of the value of the item per year of extension. Please contact us for further details.
